Delivery driver ignored police, told them to 'book the truck'
A FexEx Driver was fined in Magistrates' Court yesterday for ignoring a Police officer and obstructing the flow of traffic.
The court heard from Crown Counsel Nicole Smith, who said a Police officer noticed a FedEx truck double-parked on Reid Street with no-one in the vehicle.
The driver, Ricardo Tucker, tried to get into the truck and the officer, who was writing a ticket, told him to remain where he was.
The 45-year-old ignored the officer's command and got into the vehicle and drove off. The Police followed the truck and signalled for him to stop. Tucker stopped in front of Global House, on Reid Street, and tried to resume a delivery.
The officer told him to stop and return to his vehicle. Tucker said: "You don't need me, book the truck."
The Police asked him for his licence and Tucker said: "Book the truck."
Police warned Tucker two more times that if he did not follow orders he would be arrested. Tucker continuously refused to comply. He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police station.
Tucker told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that there was no Police officer present when he came out of the building and that it was raining very hard.
He said that delivery vans often double park because of the traffic problems in Hamilton and because of this his company always paid the tickets, and that was what he meant when he said 'book the truck'.
Mr. Warner told Tucker that he should have not been blocking traffic and fined him a total of $500 for the offences.
