Information sessions on Employment Act planned – Sen. Burch

An increased number of complaints about ill treatment in the workforce has prompted the Ministry of Labour to hold a presentation on the Employment Act so employers can fully understand their responsibilities.

Labour Minister David Burch said he hoped the presentation would help non-union businesses make better decisions when it comes to their employees.

The increase in complaints by employees came after the Ministry held a series of public information sessions.

Sen. Burch said: "Our mission then was simple — give the people the information they need to survive these challenging economic times.

"Since those meetings we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of complaints of ill treatment of employees and some confusion on the part of particularly small employers in interpreting the Employment Act 2000."

Sen. Burch said the Ministry then decided to hold a presentation for employers, particularly those who are not unionised, as the Employment Act governs employer/employee relations in non-union companies.

Sen. Burch said: "Many do not know good practice when it comes to discipline, like documentation, what constitutes reasonable time limits for expected improved performance, probation etc.

"The Employment Act 2000 is an important document that provides specific guidelines for employers and employees and sets out their rights and obligations in the workplace.

"The aim of the Employment Act 2000 presentation is to explain the Act to employers so that they develop a functional understanding of the Act, its applications as well as the rights of both employers and employees.

"It is our hope that as a result of this presentation, employers will make better decisions.

"The desired end state is for Bermuda to have fewer labour relations disputes, a more harmonious state of industrial relations and an environment where there is trust, good and fair business practices."

The presentation will be held on July 23 at 5.30 p.m. at their headquarters on the ground floor of the Ingham and Wilkinson Building, 94 Reid Street.

To RSVP and preregister for the Employment Act 2000 presentation, employers are advised to call the Labour and Training Headquarters at 297-7821 or e-mail mmcann@gov.bm.
