Man still being held in hit-and-run inquiry

A man was still being questioned by Police last night over the death of a 22-year-old man in a suspected hit and run accident.

Raymond (Smockie) Curtis was walking home from Woody's Sports Bar in the early hours of Saturday when he was allegedly struck by a car on Malabar Road, Sandy's, just a short distance from his home in Albert Row.

Police responded to a report of a body in the road at 3.48 a.m and found Mr. Curtis injured and semi-conscious. He was taken to the hospital but pronounced dead at 4.30 a.m.

A Police spokesman has said the Serious Crime Unit is treating the death as suspicious. A 25-year-old man from Sandy's parish was taken into custody over the weekend.

The spokesman said the man continued to be questioned yesterday, but would not comment on if and when any charges might be laid.

Mr. Curtis' family has been left reeling from his death, and have laid flowers and stones at a roadside memorial at Black Bay, where his body was found. His uncle Mervin Curtis, 53, told The Royal Gazette on Sunday: "I don't think my family will ever get back together after this. This is a senseless death and that is what hurts most."

An autopsy was due to be performed yesterday but the Police spokesman declined to comment on the cause of Mr. Curtis' death.
