Man tells jury of brutal beating

Temasgan Furbert told a jury yesterday that he recognised six men he knew as part of a large group that attacked him in Hamilton Parish ast February.

A man told a jury his lip was left “hanging off by a piece of skin” after he was allegedly set upon by a large group armed with wea-pons.

Temasgan Furbert, 23, required plastic surgery for that injury, plus stitches for a wound behind his left ear — allegedly inflicted by an attacker wielding a power drill.

Mr. Fur-bert told of his ordeal as he continued to give evidence in the case of seven men charged with wounding him with intent to do grievous bodily harm. He said he passed in and out of consciousness during the attack near his Hamilton Parish home. He eventually came round to find people giving him first aid before he was taken to hospital.

“I remember asking for a cigarette and I was told I didn’t have a lip on my mouth,” he explained. He also detailed cuts to the top of his head and the loss of four teeth, explaining “they got kicked out”.

Mr. Furbert suffered further bruises and cuts to his ribs, which he said were inflicted with a machete. Those charged with the attack are Detroy Smith, 24, Kyle Tannock Williams, 28, Damon Darrell, 28, Bennett Phipps, 26, Allan Douglas, 22, Kiawan Trott, 25, and Kiwaun Gilbert, 23. They are all from St. George’s.

They are accused of wounding Mr. Furbert with intent to do grievous bodily harm and damaging the windows of his sister’s home in the same incident. Douglas and Trott are said to have been armed with machetes while Tannock Williams is alleged to have had a baseball bat. They deny the charges.

According to prosecutor Robert Welling, the attack was “revenge” over a fight the previous night at Hamilton Parish Workmen’s Club, involving two men from St. George’s.

Mr. Furbert told the jury yesterday that he tried to break up the altercation between the pair, Brandon Trott and Jade Foggo, but Mr. Foggo tried to attack him. Brandon Trott allegedly took Mr. Foggo’s chain, and Mr. Furbert pledged to get it back for him.

The next night, Mr. Furbert said a group of 20 to 25 people turned up at his home in Midland Heights and chased him, saying “just get him” and asking “where’s Brandon?”. Then they jumped him and attacked him with a variety of weapons.

He told the jury he recognised six of the accused men, who he knew previously, while others had masks on.

He identified Phipps as using the power drill behind his ear and on his side while saying “f**k you Crawl boys”. Kiawan Trott allegedly pulled him off a fence he’d been trying to climb and kicked and punched him and hit him with an unspecified weapon.

He also said “f**k you Crawl guys”.

Mr. Furbert alleged that Tannock Williams hit him in the side with a baseball bat and Smith hit him with a cane. Meanwhile, he said Douglas had a machete which he used to chop his sides, and also said “f**k you Crawl boys”.

He told the jury he heard Gilbert’s voice but did not see him with a weapon.

Mr. Furbert said he knew all of the men previously — he went to Clearwater Middle School with Tannock Williams, Phipps, Smith and Gilbert — and had no beef with any of them.

He did not name Darrell as having been involved in the attack.

Defence lawyers Victoria Pearman, representing Smith, and Elizabeth Christopher, representing Tannock, suggested those accused men were never at the scene and Mr. Furbert just “put two and two together” afterwards because they’re from St. George’s.

“You call Detroy Smith’s name as one of your attackers because you feel he’s associated with Jade (Foggo),” suggested Ms Pearman.

“The reason you picked on my client is because you made an association between him and Jade and boys from St. George’s, isn’t that right?”

Meanwhile Ms Christopher suggested the faces of all those attacking him were masked.

However, Mr. Furbert insisted he saw both men during the attack.

The case continues.
