Premier's son loses services of star attorney in Los Angeles court case
The Premier's son Kevin Brown has parted ways with a second Hollywood lawyer as he seeks to clear himself of 33 felony sex counts.
At a pretrial hearing yesterday, celebrity attorney Shawn Chapman Holley asked to be relieved of her duties as alleged sex offender Brown's defence lawyer after he failed to raise enough money for legal fees.
Ms Chapman Holley told The Royal Gazette that her decision was purely financial, and nothing to do with Brown's case itself.
"I strongly believe in Dr. Brown's case and I am convinced of his innocence," she said yesterday after the pretrial hearing was cut short. "Regrettably, he has been unable to raise the necessary funds to retain counsel, primarily because of the outrageously high bail he was required to post to gain his freedom."
Bail was set at $4 million last year, when prosecutors argued that Los Angeles physician Brown was a flight risk given his connections to Bermuda.
Ms Chapman Holley is best known as part of O.J. Simpson's "dream team" of defence lawyers, working alongside high-profile attorney Johnny Cochran to clear the football player of murder in what has been described as the most publicised criminal trial in history.
She has also represented Black Panthers leader Elmer 'Geronimo' Pratt, late rapper Tupac Shakur and reality star Kim Kardashian, and appears regularly as a legal pundit on television.
Los Angeles deputy district attorney Rouman Ebrahim told The Royal Gazette that Ms Chapman Holley was never officially retained by Brown, but was expected to represent him today after he parted ways with celebrity lawyer Blair Berk in late May.
Mr. Ebrahim said that Brown has now been advised to seek legal representation at the Los Angeles County Public Defender's office. A public defender is a lawyer employed by the US government to represent those charged with a crime who cannot afford to pay for an attorney.
Brown's next hearing is set for August 6. Last month, he pleaded not guilty to charges alleging that he molested 12 women, including an undercover vice cop and a 15-year-old. He faces life in prison if convicted.
