Shave-athon
Teachers from Bermuda High School helped raise $24,435 for charity from a sponsored shave-athon.
According to BHS director of community affairs Judy Motyer, the school was able to raise $12,190, after four weeks of fundraising, a donation which was matched by Endurance Specialty Insurance Ltd.
Excited BHS students gathered on their final day of school last Friday to watch eight brave teachers shave their heads in the name of charity. Ms Motyer says the atmosphere in the room was "electric".
"It's overwhelming the response largely surpassed our hopes," Ms Motyer said.
She continued: "I think what was wonderful was the attitude of everyone doing it 'this isn't a big deal we're not sick, we don't have cancer, the hair is going to grow back in a month'. The attitude was very positive and it turned out great."
The money raised went to charity Fight for Life Foundation which was established a year ago by Kara Maderios, Jennifer Morris and Lauren Mahoney in loving memory of their friend Lori Mello, who lost her fight with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma at the age of 24.
The charity aims to provide financial assistance for Bermudians under the age of 26 battling with a life-threatening illness and are currently considering several applicants to help in the near future.
Ms Mahoney said the donation was a complete surprise and was "impressed" that a charity so small could produce such a big result.
