Dance group to hold anti-violence roadshows

A dance company concerned about the issue of violence facing Bermudians is to hold a series of roadshows next week.

'Peace in the Streets' is the brainchild of United Dance Productions (UDP) founder and artistic director Suzette Harvey.

The travelling show incorporates several art forms with the aim of targeting and addressing negative factions in the community and helping to create harmony.

"I am frustrated with Bermuda's current climate and my deep rooted feeling of responsibility to contribute to finding a solution," Ms Harvey said.

"I have always operated with the belief that we can positively influence the lives of our youth through the arts, specifically the medium of dance.

"As violence and crime continue to rise in Bermuda, UDP endeavours to maintain its commitment to injecting positive energy into the community through performing arts."

The shows will be held in four different venues across the Island. On Monday at the National Stadium from 5.30 p.m., Tuesday at the Somerset Cricket Club at 8 p.m., Thursday in the Bermuda Industrial Union's parking lot from 7.30 p.m., and on Friday in the Square in St. George's from 7.30 p.m. The shows are free.

Ms Harvey said: "Another important element is that the shows will be performed in different areas as we hear of the inability of some people to enter certain parishes due to rivalries.

"So 'Peace in the Streets' will be held across the Island. The travelling nature of the show will ensure that we are accessible to everyone."
