New St. George's Mayor tells residents: 'Give me six months' to turn town around
The new mayor of St. George's last night pledged that within six months his team will rejuvenate the town into a "shining light".
Kenneth Bascome pulled no punches with his commitment, telling a packed public meeting at Penno's Wharf: "Give us six months and I'm saying to you that this Corporation and this group of people will bring this community alive.
"We're going to make St. George's not the envy, but what everyone wants to see in Bermuda. That's a commitment from this group of people that are here.
"We are working together. There's a new-found energy and I believe with your support St. George's can become the shining light we want it to be.
"The Corporation of Hamilton have opened their meetings to the public after a year. We've only been here two months, so we are moving."
This was the first public meeting since the election of the new Corporation in December. Members last night gave updates on the various committees and their plans for the town.
There was also a question-and-answer session and opportunity for people to express their concerns on paper.
Among the work in progress is:
A brochure for a self-guided walking tour of St. George's, similar to the City of Hamilton Walkway of History;
Renovation of the kitchen at Penno's Wharf with the aim of renting out the hall for events and weddings, to increase revenue;
Plans for New Year's Eve celebrations in the town;
Market Nights every Tuesday, from April 27 to October 5.
The Activities Committee has also been resurrected. Chairman councillor Renee Ming said: "We're excited. We're passionate about St. George's and what it has to offer.
"We welcome your ideas and anything you have to offer."
