PLP members show support for workers

There was a huge show of solidarity as union members united to march on the House of Assembly yesterday – with one supporter Rose Saltus saying: "I think this is going to go down in history."

Spectators lined the streets to watch the demonstration, with a dozen more looking on from the rooftops of the Government offices, the Post Office, and the Government Administration Building.

"I think it's showing the support and the frustration," said Bermuda Industrial Union member Michael Markham, who came to show his support. "Support for people who work hard, people who deserve a decent pay that they can live on."

Mr. Markham, a card-carrying PLP supporter, said he thought people were disappointed in the Government's actions.

"There's a lot of anger," he said. "A feeling that the PLP party has betrayed them. They feel betrayed."

As the unions left the House of Assembly, Steven Astwood said that he is optimistic that the demonstration would help make a difference.

"Even if it is taken just a demonstration of solidarity, it will do something," said Mr. Astwood.
