Schoolboy released from hospital after collision

Hard hit: The windscreen of this vehicle was smashed after the vehicle was in collision with a young male pedestrian on North Shore Road near Sleepy Hollow Drive.

A 12-year-old boy escaped with minor injuries after being hit by a car as he crossed the road to get home from school.

The schoolboy was catapulted into the air on impact and then was struck a second time as he fell against the car windscreen.

The Royal Gazette understands the driver of the car was Dean Foggo, former PLP MP for St. George's West.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. yesterday on North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish, at a bus stop by Sandy Lane.

The schoolboy disembarked from a St. George's-bound bus and was in collision with a green mini-van as he attempted to cross the road.

Bus operator Donawin Mallory said: "I pulled up at the stop to let the young man off and he started to cross the street but didn't seem to look to the right.

"An oncoming vehicle overtaking the bus hit him head-on. It was a hard blow, so hard it lifted him off the ground, throwing him a few yards ahead.

"The car was still in motion, going forward, and then he hit the windscreen."

Mr. Mallory said he thought the boy was from Dellwood Middle School.

"He's old enough to know to look but for some reason he just took a chance and ran," he said.

The boy suffered head injuries and cuts. He was taken by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital but discharged last night following treatment.

A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said: "Inquiries into this incident are underway.

"Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact P.c. Stephen Millar on 295 0011."
