Thaao Dill reflects on knife assault and life

Thaao Dill: Radio presenter and Senator.

Facing the "hypothetical" that he would not be here to love was what Senator Thaao Dill was still trying to process after a man held him up at knife-point on his way to work on Friday morning.

At the Peace Rally on Sunday afternoon (see separate story), which was hosted by radio station Hott 107.5 in light of the recent violence, Sen. Dill said he was still not coping well with the assault and left early.

He told this paper he was held at knife-point around 5.50 a.m. on Friday morning as he entered the Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) building on Union Street, Pembroke on his way to work.

The assailant, according to Sen. Dill, told him he swore too much on the radio and that other comments he had made on the radio had upset him.

According to the Police report, the man was 5ft 6in, 150 pounds, dark-skinned and dropped the knife as he fled.

Sen. Dill was not physically injured, but in his address to the Peace Rally in Bernard Park, his thoughts strayed to the chance that he may not have been here tomorrow.

He said: "Considering what has happened over the last couple of days and more, in particular the outpouring of love and support from you, I though it would make sense to spend some time together.

"I will tell you a secret, I have never in my life been as nervous as I am right now. It's not because Idon't know what to say, because I don't really. It's not because I don't know how to say it, because Idon't."

The thing that makes me the most nervous is I have never felt so much love from you and the world around us.

"I have talked about this many times. What we require on a fundamental level is what Dr. King referred to as a revolution to values.

"We need to revalue how we value people.

"Pausing for a minute, Senator Dill apologised to the 100 or so attendees as he tried to regain his thoughts.

He added: "Forgive me family for I am not quite myself. When we come face-to-face with the hypothetical that you might not be here tomorrow, like really stare that in the eye, if somebody was in a slightly different mood or you had said something a little bit confusing or someone had decided to lean forward a couple of inches..."

"Considering a hypothetical, that I wouldn't be here to love and love accordingly, it's something that shocks you. It demands a level of honesty."

"We want to push this society in the right reason for the right time. You cannot lead people without loving people. You cannot save people from themselves."
