Sailing couple arrive safely after ocean drama

A “cool and levelheaded” British couple arrived safely in Bermuda last night after spending the previous 36 hours at sea bailing buckets of water out of their 44ft sloop. The couple’s boat Dream or Two got into difficulties about 130 miles south-southwest of the Island, according to a duty officer at Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre. The 68-year-old man and his 60-year-old wife were heading here from the Bahamas when they heard a bump on board during Saturday night. The duty officer said they suspected a fault in the rigging but found nothing amiss there or in the hull when they checked. On Sunday morning, they found they were taking on water and began bailing out about five buckets every half hour. The US Coast Guard alerted Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre to their plight on Sunday evening and officers there kept in touch with the sailing boat as it progressed towards the Island. The duty officer said last night: “They were able to continue their marathon bailing until they got in this evening and docked at the Customs dock in St George’s harbour around about 7pm. They are safely on the Customs dock and are sorting out what’s causing the leak.”He praised the pair for keeping calm and said they would have had little rest for the past 36 hours. “While someone is controlling the boat, someone is bailing. They got here: what an ordeal!“They were very cool and levelheaded. They worked very hard at it and they got here.”The couple were coming here from Spanish Wells in the Bahamas and are due to go on to the Azores.Useful website: www.rccbermuda.bm
