Transport and union bosses are going to arbitration as they can’t agree on the new bus timetable.Transport Minister Terry Lister said both sides had been unable to come to an agreement after ten years of discussions. The main “stumbling block” is said to be the proposed increase in the number of weekends worked by bus drivers.A consultant who “has worked on bus timetables in different parts of the world” was hired to come up with Bermuda’s first new timetable since 1998.But bus drivers have complained the new timetable would mean they only get two to four weekends off a year instead of the 12-16 weekends they are used to.It means the Department of Public Transportation (DPT) will go to arbitration with the Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU).Mr Lister said: “We have come to a point where we agree to disagree. We are going to arbitration to reach a mutually agreeable solution.“We will send the matter to arbitration as we believe that is the best way forward.”Mr Lister held a press conference this morning alongside BIU president Chris Furbert. Both parties have agreed to abide by the arbitraitor’s decision.
