Bright Temple AME to host ceremony for parents who have lost children
Bermuda will take part in a global remembrance service this weekend for parents who have lost a child and those who want to support them. The Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting is at Bright Temple AME Church, on Spring Hill Road, Warwick, from 6pm to 7.30pm on Sunday.Organiser Robin O’Neil, whose 25-year-old son Kevin died in a scooter accident in Florida last year, said the event was aimed at uniting family and friends around the world in lighting candles for an hour to honour and remember children who have died at any age from any cause. She told The Royal Gazette: “This is near and dear to my heart. Sometimes people call me now and they don’t even mention his name. They don’t say his name because they don’t want to upset me but then not saying his name does upset me.“Kevin was absolutely my heart and joy and people don’t know what to say.“This gives them an avenue to be compassionate. It’s for any parent who has lost a child of any age and anyone else who wants to come. It’s across the spectrum.”Clinical educator Ms O’Neil, 49, who runs the Passports to College charity, said her church kindly agreed to host the candle lighting service so Bermuda could join countries all over the world. The Compassionate Friends organisation says its Worldwide Candle Lighting, which happens at 7pm local time in each country, is believed to be the largest mass candle lighting on the globe. Its website says it “creates a virtual 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone”.Anyone wanting further information on Sunday’s event can call Ms O’Neil on 735-1676.Useful website: www.compassionatefriends.org.
