Bean to air his views on gay marriage

Opposition leader Marc Bean will give his views on gay marriage in a television interview to be broadcast this evening.

Mr Bean, will be appearing on the community affairs programme ‘Issues’, which airs at 8pm on Cablevision channel 80. Mr Bean will also put forward the Progressive Labour Party’s position on the question.

In the second half of the 30-minute programme Dr Sydney Gibbons, Executive Secretary of the Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, will give the church’s view on same-sex marriage.

The programme’s makers have also questioned an unnamed member of the Government on the issue. That interview will be broadcast next month.

Last month MPs voted to approve an amendment to Human Rights legislation that made it illegal to discriminate on the grounds of a person’s sexual orientation.

Opposition MPs were allowed to vote their consciences on that amendment rather than follow a party line, and Mr Bean urged his colleagues to canvass their constituents before exercising their vote. Mr Bean added that he believed the final goal of the sexual orientation amendment is legalisation of same sex marriage.

But Premier Craig Cannonier later refuted that suggestion, saying that Government had no plan to legalise same-sex marriage.

“I can assure you that under my leadership this is not about same sex marriage. That will not happen,” Mr Cannonier said.
