The Parks Department is seeking to erect temporary lifeguard facilities at John Smith’s Bay, with permanent facilities coming soon.In a planning application received by the Planning Department on June 27, the Department requested permission to establish temporary facilities at the eastern side of the Smith’s beach. The application also requested permission to place a mobile lunch wagon near the parking lot at the western side of the beach.A spokeswoman for the Parks Department said: “The temporary lifeguard facility will be used for the remainder of this season, after which time we expect the permanent facility to be completed.”She also said the intention of the application was not to erect a second lunch wagon at the site, but instead to move the existing lunch wagon to a new location. The Royal Gazette asked the Department what would be contained in the planned permanent lifeguard facility, but no details have yet been provided. The former lifeguard station at the beach was damaged by Hurricane Igor in September 2010.
