Cash prizes, workshops on tap for Sand Sculpture Competition

An entry in the annual sand sculpture competition from previous years.

Building castles in the sand has finally become a profitable enterprise.Cash and other goodies are the prizes for next month’s (August) 18th Annual Sand Sculpture Competition sponsored by the Bermuda Department of Tourism.“The Department of Tourism haven’t revealed yet how much the prize money will be,” said organiser Nicky Gurret. “But in previous years first prize was a $1,000.“One year two boys won with a sculpture of Homer Simpson on a lilo holding a real beer can.”Canadian sand sculpture experts Craig and Marji Mutch will lead workshops on the two days before the event.Mr Mutch runs Sand Sculpture Canada, a collaboration of artists who participate in sand events around the world. The competition has hosted several sand sculpture experts in previous years, but this is the first time they have brought in a couple.Ms Gurret said she couldn’t believe the annual day of sandy fun was now 18 years old.“The first year we did it, there were 12 sculptures entered,” she said. “It was an overcast day. It was mostly architects who entered, because I started it as an architect.“It has grown to have as many as 55 sculptures one year by people from all parts of the community. Last year we had around 40 sculptures.”She stressed that it is a great family event and also an attraction for visitors.“I know one couple who have come to the competition, from abroad, three years in a row,” said Ms Gurret.Beach Sculptors are advised to bring a bucket and shovel and their creativity. Props are allowed, but it is really about what you do with the sand.“People love the competition,” said Ms Gurret. “Afterwards they are so happy they have done it. Of course, some people get very upset if they don’t win.“They don’t understand why other people have won. It is an artistic endeavour. Sometimes beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”There are three judges who look at the use of space, the topic, and the execution of the idea, among other things.Sand sculpture workshops will be held at Horseshoe Bay on August 29 and 30. The competition will be held on August 31 at Horseshoe Bay Beach.“Building begins at 10am and ends with judging at 4pm. To enter e-mail bermudasandsculpture@bermudatourism.com.
