Harris keen to bring new ideas to St George

Business ethos: Alfonso Harris, owner of Churchill’s wine and cigar shop in St George’s, is going up against Garth Rothwell and Quinnel Francis in the mayoral election

Alfonso Harris, one of three candidates to become Mayor of St George, hopes to provide fresh ideas and a new perspective if he is elected for the town’s top job.

Mr Harris will go up against the Mayor Garth Rothwell and Deputy Mayor Quinnel Francis in the race for the mayorship that will be decided next month.

The owner of Churchill’s wine and cigar shop in St George’s has run for mayor once before, but he hopes this year could be his time.

“I would like to get more businesses into the town and make the most of the assets we already have,” he said.

“We need to promote our harbour and our Unesco heritage status to bring people into St George.

“I would like to see us try and push Government to get the hotel up and running, and do something about the golf course, which really is a tragedy at the moment.”

Mr Harris took over Churchill’s in 2004 and has lived in the town ever since.

The father of one says he has been impressed with the work of the corporation, but believes he can bring a “different slant” to the table.

“I live here, I run a business here and I want to do more for the town,” he said. “I want to get more involved in the community and maybe I can have a bit more of an impact.”

The St George’s businessman said he would back modification to Town Cut so that the town can accommodate a cruise ship.

“We are not going to get a cruise ship until we open up Town Cut,” he said. “The visits we are getting at the moment are very erratic and we need to address that.

“I would listen to what the people of St George have to say, but I would back the idea of opening up Town Cut to allow cruise ships back into the town.

“We need to do everything we can to help revitalise the town.

“The most important thing is that people participate in these elections and vote.

“Whether they vote for me or one of the other two, people need to take part in the process and have their say.”
