Earth Hour to be celebrated on Saturday

First Prev 1 2 Next Last

Bermuda will celebrate sustainability this Saturday with Earth Hour 2016.

While environmental charity Greenrock noted that the community is “slightly on edge” due to the ongoing public demonstrations, they said the celebrations are an opportunity to unite in support of a sustainable future for the island.

A statement by the charity said: “Earth Hour seeks to raise awareness about climate change and the need for sustainable solutions for our planet. It is primarily a symbolic event — and this is the purpose of switching off lights while also ‘lighting up’ the streets with people power.”

Among the activities scheduled to take place are a 5K Glow Fun Walk and Run, face painting, Belco bikes and live entertainement, including a glow dance performance by In Motion, fire spinners from Rockfire Produtions and a “glow party” with DJ Rusty G.

“The 5K Glow Fun Walk and Run is an event that everyone can enjoy regardless of age, gender or athletic ability,” the statement continued.

“We can all show our support by running, walking or even pushing a stroller. There will be music throughout the course along with special features such as bubbles, lanterns, a 40ft glow tunnel and an inflatable obstacle course.”

While members of the public are urged to wear reflective materials or clothing, Greenrock asked the community to use reusable glow items rather than single-use items, which will likely be thrown away after the event.

They also encouraged attendees to bring a reusable water container for use at a free water station provided by Bermuda Waterworks Ltd.

Festivities are scheduled to begin at Waterfront Properties at 8.30pm, and anyone interested in registering for the run or volunteering to help at the event is invited to visit www.earthhour.bm.
