Foggo supports ‘no closure’ decision

Shadow Education Minister Lovitta Foggo

Shadow Education Minister Lovitta Foggo has expressed her support for the OBA’s decision not to close any of the island’s schools.

Her comments follow an announcement yesterday by Minister of Education Wayne Scott who said that after consultations with various parties there would not be any school closures during the coming academic year.

“We are pleased to know that there will be no school closures by the OBA government in the upcoming school year,” said Ms Foggo in a statement today.

“At this late stage, there would clearly be chaos had they decided to pursue the rumoured school closings for this September.

“We support the relocation of some preschools to a primary school campus setting. This was a PLP governmental initiative. In many instances it provides a cost benefit to the government, whilst also ensuring a smoother transition to the primary school for students.

“We support the intent to ensure that all primary schools have a thriving music, art, and physical education component. Education must develop every aspect of the child. Building the diverse talents of our students in all facets is paramount.

“At this time, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our teachers, staff, parents and students for their dedication, support and commitment to public education over this past school year. All have been challenged with performing in less than ideal circumstances, in spite of being expected to operate at an optimum.

“The next Progressive Labour Party Government will be committed to returning public education to be the first choice in Bermuda. Education will be our priority, as our future economic growth and stability requires a well educated workforce.”
