Oil shipping firm donates to charities

A major oil shipping company has donated $10,000 to support community organisations over the Covid-19 pandemic. The donations from Teekay Bermuda Funds went to three organisations.The Centre Against Abuse got $5,000 and Age Concern and the Bermuda Sailors’ Home got $2,500 each. A spokeswoman for the company said: “Although Bermuda has now entered Phase 4, there is still a dire need to support the agencies who are dedicated to assisting community members that are facing challenges.” Laurie Shiell-Smith, executive director of the Centre Against Abuse, added: “These funds will assist our clients with obtaining domestic violence protection orders from the courts which is a major component of safety planning.” Claudette Fleming, the executive director of Age Concern Bermuda, said the charity had offered reassurance and assistance to older people over the Covid-19 pandemic, including food and access to discounts that helped their pensions stretch further. Ms Fleming added: “On behalf of the seniors we serve, we express our appreciation for helping to make our work possible.” Bob Greig, the chairman of the Bermuda Sailors’ Home, said the donation would support its mission to provide rest and recreation for the crews of ships docked in Bermuda. The spokesperson added: “On behalf of the Teekay Bermuda staff and in true Teekay spirit, we hope the donations will provide some relief to persons who are facing hardships and distress during this time of unchartered waters.”The donations were made in line with parent company Teekay Corporation’s social responsibility goals for 2020.Teekay is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada and it has had a presence on the island since 2008.
