Cleveland extended their fine early season form with this comfortable seven-wicket win over Willow Cuts at Somerset Cricket Club on Sunday.

Cuts could only muster 175 batting first, with skipper Richard Basden leading the way with 43, Dwight Basden with 27 and Bergon Spencer 21.

Charles Swan chipped in with a useful 15 while young Sheroy Fubler and Terrance Parson both added 14 runs to the total as the remaining Cuts batsmen all succumbed to Cleveland's spin attack spearheaded by Del Hollis and veteran Johnny Richardson.

Hollis returned three for 36 while Richardson grabbed three for 27. Makal Smith proved to be the visitors' best bowler with three for 22 while veteran Peter Philpott had one for 32. Cuts were dismissed in 41.5 overs.

Cleveland encountered little difficulty in surpassing Cuts' modest total with Carlton Smith top scoring with an unbeaten 52 and Aaron Adams also unbeaten on 43.

Others contributing were Charles Richardson who scored 21 and Jeff Tyrrell who stroked 15 as Cleveland reached their target in 43.2 overs.

Young Trevor Corday was the pick of the Cuts bowling with two for 36 while Reggie Tucker Jr managed one for 45.

Cleveland recorded a memorable four-wicket triumph over St.George's in their previous outing and have now won four matches in a row after going down to Somerset in their season opener at Somerset Cricket Club on May 10.

The Eastern Counties side, bolstered by the return of Curtis Jackson, Hollis and the off-season acquisition of former St.George's player Mischael Paynter, are enjoying one of their best starts to a season in recent memory.

Tony Cheeseman slammed 84 in quick time but his fine performance couldn't prevent Somerset from suffering a 16-run defeat at Lord's on Sunday.

In reply to the total put up by St. George's - their highest of the young season - Cheeseman led the way for the west enders by striking 11 fours and one six during an innings that lasted for 119 minutes.

But with only Wendell White and Shane Hollis chipping in with 30 apiece, Somerset fell short of their target.

St. George's skipper Charlie Marshall did the bowling damage by taking three wickets for a mere five runs of just two overs while Herbie Bascombe had two for 27 off 10 overs, including two maidens, and Eugene Foggo took two for 31 off 10 overs with three maidens.

Earlier, opener Oronde Bascombe topped St. George's batting with 36 with opening partner Detroy Smith striking 29, the two putting on 77. Others among the runs were Greg Foggo on 23, Jade Foggo 20 and Sinclair Gibbons 16.

Randy Simmons was Somerset's best bowler with four wickets for 31 off 10 overs with two maidens while David Gibbs had two for 51 off 10 overs.

Western Stars 223-8

PHC 91

Hasan Durham spun PHC out of this match as he grabbed five wickets for five runs off six overs, including four maidens, to lead Western Stars to a 132-run victory at St. John's Field.

With Durham in full charge, PHC never looked capable of reaching their target of 224. Kevin Hurdle assisted by taking three wickets for 28 off seven overs, including a maiden.

Young Taurean Manders led the PHC batting with 22 while his father, Andre Manders, followed on 20.

Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock was top bat for Stars with 64, including six fours and a six, while Arnold Manders struck 42 and Durham 23. PHC skipper Cal Waldron took three wickets for 39 off nine overs with two maidens while Andre Manders had two for 32 off nine overs.
