Devonshire Trott to easy victory

The battle of two newly-promoted teams was hardly that as Bailey?s Bay folded like a pack of cards at home to Devonshire yesterday.

Missing key players due to suspension and facing a challenging target of 227, the hosts plummeted to 106 all out in 28.1 overs as an all-round team effort saw Winston Trott?s men to victory by 121 runs at Sea Breeze Oval.

Bay ? who had no partnerships of major significance ? were undone by a mixture of inept batting and tidy, nagging bowling by Devonshire?s quartet of Trott, Dean Stephens, Dennis Williams and Simroy Crossdale.

The latter spearheaded Bay?s demise, grabbing four for eight from 4.1 overs, with Stephens taking three for 31 from nine overs; skipper Trott two for 32 from ten overs and Williams, one for 29 from five overs.

Opener Calvin (Patches) Dill and middle-order batsman Damon Edwards were joint top-scorers for Bay with 23 each as their team-mates failed to make an impression; seven of them falling for single digits.

Devonshire?s wicket-keeper Ricky Brangman Jr. was a busy man gloving five catches, including the first three dismissals, as Bay found themselves in early trouble on three for 39. They sunk further to 87 for six and barely limped past 100 thanks to a six over extra cover from Dennis Pilgrim.

However, after he hauled out to long off going for another extravagant shot, the end was within sight and Edwards, Rodney Trott and Clarkie Trott did not last long under the mounting pressure.

Earlier, Devonshire?s total of 227 for seven in 50 overs was built on half-centuries from young Brangman and Stephens who hit 51 (seven fours; one six) and 59 (two fours; eight sixes) respectively and shared a 100-run stand for the third wicket after their openers were dismissed cheaply. There were also 43 extras (22 wides).

Spinner Rodney Trott was the pick of Bay?s bowlers with returns of four for 44 in his ten overs. Pilgrim and Clarkie Trott also got a wicket apiece.

?We had to win. Our backs were to the wall after we lost our first match last week,? said Devonshire captain Winston Trott, alluding to the home defeat to Willow Cuts.

?Our batting came together and our bowlers finished it off. The fielding was pretty tight also. The guys came to play and we were in the right frame of mind.?

He noted that with the one-day fixtures being reduced to one round it?s imperative to win as many games as possible to avoid relegation. No longer can a team lose a few matches and hope to ?stay up?.
