Tennis youngsters shine

Bermuda could well be in three finals of the International Tennis Federation's (ITF) Caribbean 14-and-Under Developmental Championships currently taking place in St. Vincent.

In today's semi-final action, David Thomas and Ashley Brooks will battle for places in the boys' and girls' singles finals respectively while Thomas and Kris Frick will also contest a place in the boys' doubles final.

However, Bermuda's chance of being among the top finishers in the team competition received a harsh setback yesterday when the fourth team member, Jasmine Quinn, was injured during practice.

"We were training this morning and she pulled a muscle in her neck. That's messed us up. We were looking good for second place (team-wise) but I don't know what's going to happen now", said coach Howard Cross, speaking to The Royal Gazette last night.

Quinn, who did not qualify for the main draw but was well placed in the round-robin consolation after winning her first game in that section, had to withdraw from the girls' singles. Her misfortune also ended the Island's hopes in the girls' doubles in which she and Brooks had advanced to the quarter-finals.

"We've lost some points there with that injury," noted Cross who is "quite happy" with how his contingent has performed.

The tournament began with round-robin qualifying matches, after which the top singles and doubles players advanced to a main draw. Players have been accumulating points for their country according to how far they have advanced. Competitors who lost in the first or semi-final round of the main draw went on to consolation matches.

Thomas, Frick and Brooks all qualified for the main draw but Frick lost his first-round, main-draw match while the other two progressed to today's main-draw semi-finals. Frick will vie for fifth or sixth place while Thomas and Brooks cannot finish lower than fourth.

"All the teams are pretty well balanced. There's not to much difference among the teams," assessed Cross, adding that he expects Trinidad to lift the team title when the tournament finishes tomorrow.

At last year's championships, Brooks and Sasha Fisher won the girls' doubles and the latter was third in the girls' singles while Brooks was ninth. Frick, then a 12-year-old, was a commendable tenth in the boys' singles.
