Alger returns in style
staved off one set point on his way to victory over Michael Way in the men's final of the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club Invitatational at Coral Beach Club on Saturday.
Alger, who was the top player on the Island when Way was just 10-years-old, used his experience to beat the current number one 6-2, 7-5. With both players suffering from a case of nerves, Alger was quick to regain his composure and roared to a quick first-set victory.
But in the second, Way altered his game plan and broke Albert twice to take a 3-0 lead.
"I really thought at that point that I was going to lose,'' said Alger. "He was playing really well and he was making some great shots. But then I dug a little deeper, hit a few winners and before you knew it I was back in the game.'' Way tried everything he could but "it just wasn't to be,'' he said. "He (Alger) had such a big first serve, I tried to attack his second service, thinking if I was succesful he wouldn't want to have a second serve, thus taking of the pace off his serve to ensure that he got it in.'' The turning point, Way said, came in the fourth of the second set. "I needed to hold my serve for a 4-0 lead but I didn't play that well ...'' Way's woes continued in the men's open doubles, when he and Mike Curry fell 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 to Stuart Smith and Mark Cordeiro.
In the women's final, Wendy Ahl upset top seed Kelly Holland 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, although Holland earned a measure of revenge when she teamed with Gill Butterfield to take the open doubles crown, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 over Ahl and sister Heidi Boyle.
Rosemarie Asch defeated Yvonne Van Nostrund 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 to take the ladies singles 50 title, thus denying the Van Nostrunds a title here for the first time in 20 years. Smith picked up his second title when he and Angela Stevens earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Nancy Drake and Ted Hoehn to win their second straight mixed doubles title.
