Battling St.George's refuse to buckle . . .
St. George's are likely to end up in the Second Division at the end of this season, but maximum points against the bottom team in the First Division certainly cannot be taken for granted as title-chasing PHC found out at Wellington Oval yesterday.
Maybe it was the failure to win the points off PHC earlier this season after the Zebras made an illegal fourth substitution in a 4-0 win that was fresh on the minds of the St. George's players.
Or it could simply have been a matter of pride that kept them battling after falling behind on three occasions at Wellington Oval before snatching only their third point of the season.
With only four goals in 10 games to their credit prior to this match, St.
George's were not given much of a chance of victory against a PHC team that has one of the best defensive records in the division.
Things went according to plan after just nine minutes when PHC capitalised on some poor defending by St. George's to open the scoring through Raynel Lightbourne.
Two minutes later the home side equalised when Dano Outerbridge fouled Donald Whitfield in the box and Dwayne Richardson sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot.
PHC went back in front in the 19th minute when Kervin Moreno stopped a ball from going out and Shawn Simons scored from six yards. But the half finished 2-2 as stubborn St. George's, missing captain Neil Paynter in defence, scored a second equaliser in the 33rd minute when Sinclair Smith netted the first of his two goals. The striker received a pass, controlled the ball on his chest and in the same motion unleashed a shot into the far bottom corner which the diving Jay Smith couldn't stop.
Blenn Bean caught Gregory Smith off his line and chipped the ball over him from 20 yards in the 52nd minute to put PHC back in front for a third time.
And when the Zebras stepped up the pressure and began to control the game, it looked as though they would finally wrap up victory.
However, they again lost their lead in the 79th minute when, after failing to clear a corner, St. George's made PHC pay with a powerful header from Smith from six yards, his third goal in two games.
Veteran Gary (Judge) Tucker played his first game in several years and had a good showing in St. George's' midfield, showing touches of old.
There was one booking, Tokia Russell of PHC for time-wasting in the 67th minute as he was about to be substituted.
