Bay counting on Doc to inject some spark

chose Andre (Doc) Manders as a replacement for Cal Dill in tomorrow's final at Lord's.

As a solid early-order batsman the guest player from Western Stars is the lone colt on the team which will be captained by Chris Smith who will have Charlie Marshall as his vice captain. There are no other surprises on the team.

Bailey's Bay's complete team is: Chris Smith (captain), Charlie Marshall (vice captain), Noel Gibbons, Ricky Hill, Glenn Smith, Terry Burgess, Andre Manders (colt), Anthony Braithwaite, Devrae Hollis, Clarkie Trott, Jermaine Outerbridge. Reserves: Cal Dill, Roderick Masters, Desmond Crockwell.

Skipper Smith said last night that he was very pleased with the team that was selected on Wednesday night and reckoned that their chances of winning remained good.

"It's unfortunate that a regular like Cal Dill was left out, but the team is still strong and I believe our chances of winning are good,'' said Smith.

The prospect of playing in the popular competition for the first time was a thrill for Manders. "I've played in the Cup Match and the Central Counties and now this is kind of like the third jewel,'' he said yesterday.

Manders added: "I hope I am not too nervous. I plan to do my best whether it's batting, bowling or fielding.'' As Bailey's Bay has discovered over the last few years, it is going to take a lot of hard work to defeat the champions and the challengers will therefore have to play some aggressive cricket.

Manders revealed that during recent training sessions the squad has concentrated on bowling and fielding, claiming this is where Bailey's Bay have to be sharp in order to stand any chance of winning.

With no genuine spin bowler included in the team it looks as though the challengers will have to count on players like Glenn Smith, Ricky Hill and Manders to provide them with slow bowling.
