Blazers steer clear of danger

Boulevard yesterday demonstrated how serious they were about retaining their First Division status by powering to this emphatic two-goal victory over visiting PHC at Lord's yesterday.

Defeat would have drawn Boulevard closer to the relegation battle, but the Blazers were able to prove on this occasion that there were anything but Second Division contenders.

A goal in the first half by Rodney Bascome and two in the second by Kenny Hill and Amon Brown secured the points for Boulevard. Sheridan Ming netted for PHC in the first half.

PHC seldom had a genuine threat. They were able to advance deep into Boulevard's half on occasions but their approach work broke down through lack of support in midfield as they reached the penalty area.

That's where Boulevard's defence, marshalled by Leroy Stevens and Donnie Charles, took over and ended any attempt of a raid.

Bouelvard, inspired up front by Dwight Warren and Rodney Bascome, took the initiative from the start and it wasn't a surprise when Bascome hammered home their first goal after 15 minutes after Warren smartly rounded left full-back Enwar Hunt and crossed for Bascome to do the damage.

Boulevard took complete charge after this with right full-back Herbie Bascome watching in agony as his fierce drive from close in was blocked by goalkeeper Jay Smith after 17 minutes, then Warren was mystified as his close-range shot was saved by Smith two minutes later.

Midfielder Leonard Hypolite struck a hard 19-yarder over after 30 minutes as Boulevard pinned down the young PHC defence and added constant pressure.

It was against the run of play that PHC countered with Boulevard goalkeeper Mitchell Trott unable to control a high lob just outside of the penalty box.

It deflected off his chest and the greatful Ming was there to steer it into the empty goal to level the score 1-1.

Boulevard though quickly re-established their firm grip of play and had two misses before the half when both attacks should have produced goals.

After 42 minutes Warren blasted his shot over from 14 yards after Herbie Bascome and Rodney Bascome combined to provided him with the cross, then two minutes later Warren again blundered when he miskicked a cross from Rodney when he was only 10 yards from goal.

Boulevard were not hampered as heavier rain showers fell when play restarted and after 54 minutes Neil Robinson provided the cross that bothered goalkeeper Smith and Hill was there to put home the rebound.

About 15 minutes later Rodney Bascome had a chance to add to the scoring but he placed his 15-yard drive over the goal.

PHC were reinforced by the appearances of Michael Trott and Raynel Lightbourne off the bench, both were forceful with hard dribbling at the defence.

Lightbourne however blew one of their few scoring chances in the game when he collected a cross from Ottis Steede struck it wide of the post from 11 yards after 85 minutes.

Substitute Amon Brown wrapped up the scoring right at the end when he netted from close.
