Coca-Cola Youth Bowling Championships next week in Columbus, Ohio.

Warwick resident Davien Bean, a student at Warwick Academy, will compete against 64 other bowlers in the boys scratch division at Columbus Square Bowling Palace. Competition starts next Wednesday and runs for four days.

The 152-average bowler has a career best 550 three-game series.

Bean will be among a field of 284 bowlers aged between 12 and 21 who will compete in their respective girls and boys handicap and scratch divisions for $30,000 in scholarships.

Bean qualified for the tournament by rolling high scores in a zone qualifying event.

When tournament play begins, the youngsters will roll the first of three four-game blocks within their respective divisions. On the second day of competition the field will be cut to 24 in each division and pinfall totals will be dropped.

The 24-division semi-finalists will then bowl two additional four-game blocks to determine the top four scores in each group. These top four scorers will advance on July 13 to division stepladder roll-off matches that will determine the international champions.

First place scholarship awards will be $3,000, second place $2,000, third place $1,500 and fourth place $1,000. Bowlers rolling the highest four-game series and high game will also receive plaques.

The 284 athletes represent 50 US states, six Canadian provinces, Puerto Rico and military commands in the European Zone, Far Eastern Zone and Caribbean Zone.
