Cann keeps torrid pace
At his current pace, he could press for something even more whilst pushing St.
David's toward the top of the Premier Division standings.
It is no fluke that St. David's six-match league winning streak has coincided with the maturation of Cann as a big-time player. And with the Eastern Counties and Knockout Cup also on the horizon the 20-year-old has many opportunities to build on an already flighty season.
Cann becomes a member of the Fab Five club for the fifth time this season and is joined by Dexter Basden of the Somerset Cup Match team and Willow Cuts, Cup Match MVP Dean Minors of St. George's, Joseph Matthews of Willow Cuts and Kenny Phillips of St. George's.
Lionel Cann: Brought an added excitement to Cup Match in his colt year for St.
George's, which started is fine fashion with the first wicket of the match.
Hit a swashbuckling 44 to start the second-day fireworks and added two catches. Returning to his club side, the youngster smashed the Police bowling for a rapid-fire 73 and then claimed two for 26 from 10 overs.
Dexter Basden: Enjoyed his finest weekend of the season. Scored 70 in Somerset's second innings of Cup Match, a performance that went against their dour approach to play for a draw. Followed that up with 62 in big win at Devonshire Rec.
Dean Minors: Richard Basden was Somerset's best bowler in Cup Match...really.
The episode with Minors was just a mirage -- NOT. The chunky left-hander turned good-looking figures of four for 23 into five for 107 from 19 overs after taking hold of Basden, who did his damage off four steps. Ten sixes and three fours brought the crowd to life, but also made sure that Somerset would take no chances in the afternoon session.
Joseph Matthews: His best all-round performance of the season assured that Cuts would have their best result of the season. Scored 59 out of Cuts' 231 and then accounted for top scorer Albert Steede (90) as Devonshire fell short by 11 runs. Matthews claimed three for 53.
Kenny Phillips: Has come up on the short end with the ball recently but certained waved a big stick against Western Stars on Sunday. Blasted Andre Manders for 27 in one over on way to 68 not out, which just about took match out of the league champions' reach.
DEAN MINORS -- Stylish wicket-keeper captured Cup Match MVP honours.
