Cougars face crunch in fight for survival
two weeks ago and Devonshire Cougars can kiss goodbye to the Coca Cola First Division.
Cougars have to find a way to pick up their game when they meet Devonshire Colts at Devonshire Rec. tonight in a match that could decide their fate.
The second-from-bottom team blew a chance to move away from the last two places on March 6 when they were crushed 3-0 at home by a Rangers side without top scorer Rohaan Simons. Failure by PHC, Somerset and Hotels to win on the same weekend left the bottom four spots in the standings unchanged going into the final two rounds of matches.
With the league championship now settled, along with places for the two April finals, all attention switches to the bottom of the table where the relegation race is still wide open -- just two points separating four teams. And Cougars again get chance to put some pressure on the three teams around them by winning tonight.
Victory would take them -- temporarily at least -- two points clear of both Hotels and Somerset while a draw or loss would leave them in a fast sinking ship to the Second Division, a division they only left in 1996.
Tomorrow night Somerset play champions Vasco at Somerset while on Sunday PHC meet Dandy Town and Hotels take on Boulevard.
With an inferior goal difference to the other teams, Cougars must get maximum points from their last two games if they are to stay at least one point ahead of two teams.
They still have their fate in their own hands and the recent FA Cup match against Colts suggests this match will be just as close and tense.
Striker Philip Clarke, who limped off against Rangers with a leg injury, has had two weeks to rest and Cougars will be hoping he is fit to lead their attack alongside Aljame Zuill, an ex-Colts player.
Former champions Colts are only in sixth place themselves but with five points separating them from Hotels and Somerset, they should be good enough for a place in the Martonmere Cup.
Colts also still have plenty to play for as they will be searching for some form in time for their visit to the National Stadium for the FA Cup final on April 12.
