DeSilva through to Antigua final

Championships in Antigua continued yesterday as she swept through to the girls' 14-and-under singles final.

DeSilva is now guaranteed valuable world junior ranking points whether she wins or loses Saturday's final against Arianna Marshall of Barbados.

Following a come-from-behind three set victory over the top seed, Susie Molina of the Netherland Antilles on Wednesday, DeSilva continued her winning ways yesterday, beating another Barbadian, Anne Lee Bryant 6-3, 6-2.

Bermuda's Jovan Whitter, meanwhile, lost his round-robin boys 14-and-under consolation match against Aruba's Jose Luis Muguruza 3-6, 1-6. But he will play one more match today in which he too can earn world ranking points.

The Island's third player in Antigua, Danielle Downey, who was eliminated from the main draw earlier in the week, advanced to the consolation final on Wednesday with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Surinam's Whitney Renfern.

Her opponent for today's final was due to be decided in last night's second semi-final.

A total of 37 players, 13 girls and 24 boys, are competing in what is the region's last major junior tournament of the year.

The event also caps a banner season for Bermuda's juniors who have reached a string of finals in the US and Caribbean.
