But another performance at the same international meet affected a fellow Bermudian in a slightly different way.

Triple jumper Brian Wellman, preparing for next week's World Indoor Track and Field Championships, undoubtedly had his concentration broken when Alicier Urrutia of Cuba set a world indoor record at a meet in Sindelfingen, Germany.

Urrutia, a 22-year-old relative unknown leaped 17.83 metres to improve by six centimetres the old mark of 17.77 set by Leonid Voloshin of Russia three years ago in Grenoble, France.

The Cubans dominated the event, with Joel Garcia setting a world indoor best of the season of 17.62 before Urrutia broke the mark. Yet another Cuban, Olympic bronze-medallist Yoelvi Quesada figures to be one of Wellman's main threats next week.

Wellman's personal best is 17.72 metres, set two years ago when he won the gold medal at the World Indoor Championships in Barcelona.

As for Douglas, he finished second in the 200 metres behind Briton Linford Christie, his best result of the 1997 indoor season.

Douglas, who has hinted he will retire after the 1998 Commonwealth Games, had a time of 21.06 seconds, a nose behind Christie's 20.84. Christie also won the 60 metres, running a fast 6.51.
