Fisher wins silver in record time
her collection when she grabbed a silver medal at the World Veterans Athletic Championships in Buffalo, New York yesterday.
Making a rare appearance in the 400 metres hurdles, Fisher clocked an impressive one minute, 3.55 seconds to narrowly eclipse the mark set by Rolanda Dill (1:03.80) more than 11 years ago in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
It was the third track record established by the 35-year-old Bermudian this year. She smashed her own 800 and 1500 metre marks at the Pan-Am Games in Argentina in March, and also currently holds the 10,000 metres national record.
Yesterday's performance saw a fast-finishing Fisher overhaul the Canadian finalist in a dash for the line, but she failed to catch the Swiss entrant who took gold in 1:02.66.
On Saturday, Fisher made light work of qualifying for tomorrow's 800 metres when she eased up to win her semi-final in a pedestrian 2:21, although that still proved to be the fastest time in either heat. She will now be favoured for another medal in tomorrow's final, and is also expected to be a contender in the 1500 metres later this week.
Just two Bermuda athletes entered the Games, in which eligibility is restricted to females 35 and over, and males 40 and over.
Last Thursday, Peggy Couper took fifth place in the 50-54 division of the 10K cross country.
A familiar face in Bermuda, veteran Sid Howard of New York, who regularly competes in January's International Race Weekend and unofficially in the May 24 Marathon, finished first in his 800 metres heat yesterday and will race in today's final.
The championships, at which temperatures have soared as high as 97F, have attracted more than 6,000 athletes from 70 nations.
