Foggo's heroics save the champs

St. George's 171-9 Bowler Gregg Foggo scored probably the most important six runs of his career as his big hit against Hasan Durham with one full over remaining saved Knockout Cup champions St. George's from defeat at Lord's on Saturday.

Before lifting Durham over the wide mid-on boundary on the final ball of the penultimte over, St. George's faced the prospect of scoring the six runs needed for victory off the final over from the experienced Arnold Manders. It was Manders' contribution that took this match down to the wire, after St.

George's looked to be cruising to victory at 154-6 in the 46th over.

Opener Eugene Foggo (36) and Clevie Wade (47) rescued St. George's from early trouble at 43-4 after 17 overs with a big partnership of 87 for the fourth wicket in 21 overs. But when they departed in successive overs -- Wade to a run out decision made by Wally Manders that infuriated him -- Stars were able to get back into the match.

They had to wait another seven overs for their next wicket, however, as Dean Minors (17) and Ricky Hodsoll -- the last of their recognised batsmen -- put on 24 for the sixth wicket. Manders, in his first over back, trapped Hodsoll lbw.

Then on successive deliveries in his next over, Manders removed Minors and Sinclair Gibbons -- bowled and stumped -- to make it 161-8. And when David Adams was caught by Manders at backward point in the next over by Durham, the stage had been set for a thrilling finish.

In the end Foggo's heroics, with Ryan Steede standing nervously at the other end, overshadowed Manders' own performance of four for 33 from nine overs as Stars crashed to their second loss of the season in the space of seven days.

The win also avenged their heavy defeat to Stars in the Camel Cup final and now takes them to within one win of defending the trophy they won against Bailey's Bay in the final last year.

Foggo was part of a St. George's bowling attack which succeeded in keeping Stars to under four runs an over right through their innings. After 10 overs Stars had scored 28 and after 25 they had 84 on the board.

Albert Steede, batting for three hours and four minutes, was the top bat for Stars with 54 while Jeff Richardson scored 24. The pair added 47 for the third wicket in their bid to repair the early damage which included the loss of Treadwell Gibbons in the second over.

Spinners David Adams and Eugene Foggo were the pick of the St. George's bowlers, with Adams taking two for 33 and Foggo two for 35, both from 10 overs.
