Mid-Atlantic Athletic Club president Forgesson topped a field of 1,000 in the Casino Niagara International Marathon in two hours, 39 minutes -- his first victory over the 26.2 mile distance in 26 attempts.

And that after being advised by his doctor and his wife not to take part because of his illness.

The triumph, on a course which started in Buffalo, New York and ended at the world-famous attraction in Ontario, earned him a plane ticket to anywhere in the world.

"Maybe I'll use it to come back here next year,'' Forgesson joked afterwards.

The Bermuda Government employee added: "It's wonderful because to win any marathon is a great achievement. I had to work for it today because the leader was well out in front at one stage.'' Forgesson said he hadn't known what to expect in the race because he didn't know who would be among the competition.

His strategy, he declared, was to run conservatively and aim for a time of 2:40.

He surpassed that mark thanks to a dramatic turn of events with around four miles left in the race.

The leader had opened up a 10-minute gap forcing Forgesson to think about settling for second place.

"All of a sudden at 19 or 20 miles someone yelled out that he was in trouble and I passed him and he was walking at 22 miles,'' revealed Forgesson. "I knew if I could just keep it steady from there on, I'd be okay.'' Conditions for the race were perfect, he said.

"You couldn't have asked for better weather. In Bermuda we run in 80 degrees plus and 80 percent humidity all summer, so to come to this was fabulous. You feel like you can run all day.'' While the event started off in downtown Buffalo, the course shifted to Canada's Nigara Parkway, alongside the Niagara River, one of the most beautiful stretches for competitive running in the world.

"It's a spectacular area,'' Forgesson agreed. "I mean, you can't ask for a more scenic course to take your mind off the running. It was a great run with a great view.'' Despite his win, Forgesson has decided not to accompany his fellow club members to next weekend's New York Marathon.

"I wanted to try something different and we have friends here in Niagara Falls who suggested I try this one,'' said Forgesson. "I'm glad I did.'' BRETT FORGESSON -- victory in yesterday's Niagara marathon.
