Goater finds the net
did the previous one -- by scoring in Rotherham's 3-3 draw away to Wrexham in a Second Division clash.
Goater, who netted when Rotherham won 2-0 away to Exeter in their season-opener last season, scored his team's second goal in the 75th minute from close range following a Des Hazel corner to make it 2-2. Wrexham had led three times in the match, including a second-minute penalty after the Rotherham goalkeeper had committed a foul.
Rotherham scored their first equaliser in the 22nd minute from midfielder Ian Banks. Wrexham went back in front four minutes into the second half before Goater wiped out that lead 15 minutes from the end.
However, two more goals came in the closing minutes as Wrexham went in front again in the 88th minute only for Shaun Goodwin to equalise a minute later to earn the visitors a point.
"I'm happy to get off the mark,'' said Goater last night from his home in Rotherham. "I'm looking to start the season like I did last year and I'm looking for around 15 or 20 goals.'' With Imre Varadi serving the first of a two-game suspension (the second will be served in a League Cup match this week at Wigan), Goater linked up in the attack with new signing Ian Halliwell who knocked the ball in from the far post for Goater to score his goal.
"They (Wrexham) went ahead each time but we dominated the game,'' Goater said. "The boss wasn't happy that those two points have gone to waste and could be valuable points at the end of the season. But the players are happy we didn't lose.'' Goater was Rotherham's leading scorer in the early stages of last season with seven goals in the first 13 games before World Cup duty and then an injury interrupted his season. He is looking for a full season with plenty of goals this term as he continues in his bid to attract the attention of a top club.
"I want to be amongst the top goal-scorers in Division Two, so I've got to buckle down now,'' he said.
