be a learning experience.
Yesterday they learned they'll be spending an extra couple of days at the Junior Pan-Am Games after a surprising 2-1 victory over Venezuela.
Rebounding from an opening-day loss to the host Chileans on Saturday, Bermuda received a 31st minute goal from Caroline Black to pick up the their first international victory since 1987.
Bermuda, who were expected to finish in ninth or tenth place, will now be battling for fifth or sixth after games this week against Uruguay and Canada.
Black also netted a first-half goal for Bermuda, who took over the momentum when goalkeeper Amy Dawson saved a penalty flick seven minutes into the second half.
With an average age of just over 16, Bermuda are believed to be the youngest team at the competition. They spent two years training and raising $100,000 in funds to make the trip.
"The girls are excited and I'm delighted with their performance,'' coach Herman Dai-Smith said.
