Late two-goal burst lifts Rangers clear

Two late goals within a span of two minutes by Craig Darrell and Ryan Belboda saw the home side come from behind to stun Devonshire Colts in this top-of-the-table Coca Cola First Division clash at Southampton Oval yesterday.

The three points hoisted Southampton into sole possession of first place.

Darrell struck Rangers' equaliser after 78 minutes when a corner by Rohaan Simons found him unmarked and he stroked the ball home from 16 yards.

Unsettled by this setback, Colts folded again two minutes later when Belboda headed into the net from close range with the defence in disarray.

Colts, who went into the match with a share of the First Division lead, learned that having territorial advantage means nothing unless you score goals. They dominated play for the entire first half but had only a penalty by skipper Shannon Burgess to show for their superiority.

Throughout the opening half the visitors roamed Southampton's half at will but time and time again poor finishing proved their downfall.

Colts were boosted by the early lead, a spot kick awarded after Brenton Harris pulled down Melchesedec Gibbons after 11 minutes.

For the following 25 minutes Colts excelled but their forwards were unable to direct accurate shots on goal when in good scoring positions.

In sharp contrast Southampton were unable to find their rhythm and lacked ideas up front with only Darrell causing concern with the odd long-range shot.

After 28 minutes Randy Darrell in the Southampton goal showed his efficiency when he quickly advanced and dived to his left to block a shot from Jerome Laws.

And 10 minutes later the veteran keeper was alert again, blocking a shot by hard-working midfielder Romond Douglas.

Southampton coach John Tucker made a crucial decision at the start of the second half, wisely taking off Harris and midfielder Oscar Riley for Travis Wilkinson and Kwame Tucker. It was a move which resulted in their attack firing on all cylinders for the first time.

Rangers' pace and forcefulness soon began to stretch the Colts defence although there were no immediate clear cut chances.

As the home side began to put pressure on their opponents, Colts had to be content with sporadic attacks most of which were spearheaded by the hard-working Keishon Smith. But opportunites were wasted as substitute Marvin Belboda and others hesitated in front of goal and were robbed of possession.

Belboda and Smith both blew chances after 70 and 72 minutes respectively, putting shots wide from just inside the box.

Rangers answered with sub Wilkinson curling a left-footed free kick just wide of the post from 19 yards.

After 77 minutes Colts goalkeeper Troy Hall advanced off his line to block Kwame Tucker's drive with the ball rolling for a corner. And it was from the subsequent kick that Darrell hammered home the first goal.

Then with the home side pressing, Colts' defence wilted and allowed Ryan Belboda to smartly head home the winner from 12 yards.
