More light woes at BAA
call off the same First Division match on his ground for the second time within eight days.
Saturday night's rescheduled match between Hotels and North Village was postponed for a second time because of a dimly lit area of the pitch -- the same ruling Curtis made at BAA on Feburary 20.
As fans began to pour into the facility for the game, they learned that the kick-off the thumbs down -- even though the women's FA Cup semi-final game between Rude Girls and Dandy Stars was played earlier under similar conditions.
Curtis told The Royal Gazette : "The lighting is just too bad (especially near the North goal) so I decided to call the game off.'' Darkness in a few areas was evident to the bare eye when Curtis made his decisions about 30 minutes prior to the 9.00 p.m. kick-off. But fans and both teams' players and officials privately indicated the match should have gone on.
Said Adams: "Yes, there was one light out. We couldn't get it fixed in time because of the rainy weather, but we put on extra lighting to replace it and there was no reason for him to call off the game ... the lights used for practice in the goal-keeping area were switched on to help compensate for the loss of the bigger light,'' said Adams. "He has done this to us before, I just cannot understand his thinking. Both teams wished to play, the girls game (was) played and he is the only one complaining about the lights.'' Adams assured that the entire lighting situation would be fixed today with a crane having already been ordered to assist electricians in putting up new fixtures.
And Curtis got some indirect support from Ralph Tumbridge, who refereed the women's game.
While refusing to comment on Curtis' decision, Tumbridge noted that he had difficulty picking up the linesmen's flag down at the south-western corner.
"But I had no problem with starting the game because of the darker areas on the field of play. I figured that since the women play at a much slower pace it wouldn't be an issue.'' "The second game was up to Curtis, it wasn't my business. All I can say is that I gave no consideration to calling off my game, none whatsoever.'' The Bermuda Football Association, who are the official lease holders of the ground this season, will likley enter the fray today.
