New-look squad for Caribbean tour
designed to help prepare them for the ICC Trophy next year in Malaysia, was named yesterday.
In addition to naming the squad, Bermuda Cricket Board of Control confirmed that the new destination would be Guyana instead of Jamaica as originally announced, the change being made only because flights to Jamaica were fully booked during the holiday period.
The squad of 14 for the probable six-game tour sees a few changes to the squad that went to Guyana for the Shell/Sandals tournament in October because of injuries and unavailability.
The full tour party is as follows: Albert Steede (capt), Dean Minors, Jermaine Postlethwaite, Arnold Manders, Dexter Smith, Bruce Perinchief, Del Hollis, Janeiro Tucker, Corey Hill, Jason Simons, Jeff Richardson, Roger Trott, Kevin Hurdle, Greg Foggo.
New faces added from the previous tour are Del Hollis, Corey Hill, Kevin Hurdle, Dexter Smith, Jermaine Postlethwaite and Jason Simons. Those missing are Charlie Marshall, Clay Smith, Glenn Smith, Clevie Wade, Anthony Braithwaite, Roger Blades and Kameron Fox.
Coach Allan Douglas said he was satisfied that Bermuda had chosen players capable of giving a good account of themselves and felt that the unavailability of others would enable some of newcomers "to prove their stuff''.
"Most of the players who were with us on the previous trip are unavailable because of business commitments, personal reasons or injuries. But they will be ready for ICC selection when we return,'' said Douglas.
Two of the Island's most promising young players, Fox and Glenn Smith, are among those missing through injuries. But both are expected to make an immediate return to the squad when it returns.
"Young Kameron Fox is among the injured along with Glenn Smith, but both will be back with us. Kameron has had a serious leg injury and that's why we are not taking him. We want him to be fully recovered in time for ICC, we are giving him a complete rest. When we come back he can start training again,'' said Douglas.
The coach said he hoped the new faces would take advantage of the opportunity being offered to them and use it to enhance their chances of inclusion in the final ICC selection next month.
"It also gives us the opportunity to look at some other players and see just how they perform at a higher level and under different conditions. It's a serious trip and the guys really have to work hard so they can earn the right to be included in our future international plans.'' IN AND OUT -- Dexter Smith (above left) is included in Bermuda's squad to tour Guyana over the Christmas holidays while fellow opener Glenn Smith (above right) has been ruled out through injury.
