Pressure heats up for clubs to fill coaching vacancies
With the soccer season rapidly approaching, several First and Second Division clubs are set to have new faces pacing the sidelines as the annual coaching merry-go-round continues.
Gone are Jack Castle, Vance Brown, Anthony Stovell and Johnny Boyles from PHC, Prospect, Paget and Wolves respectively.
Castle's removal from the fray after just one season has been a hot topic in recent weeks and it is believed that his immediate predecessor, Alfie Eve, is about to reassume the position, with assistance from club president Leroy Lewis.
Eve was last seen in the 1991-92 season leading his men to a trio of titles, including the Charity Cup, FA Cup and league titles, something the club brass would not mind having repeated after a lean season which left only one piece of silverware -- the Charity -- adorning their trophy cabinet.
Meanwhile, Brown came to a mutual parting of the ways after two years at the helm of the police squad.
Former Hotels midfielder Neill Topping steps in with the task of "giving the extra push to get them over the hump'' according to club secretary Cal Smith.
Wolves, which has been linked to Castle, currently have a void in the coaching position, one they anxiously wish to fill soon.
Club president Kavon Trott said that he would have to do the job if a replacement is not found, but made it clear that this would indeed be a last resort.
"We're still in the dark right now,'' said Trott. "We want someone with quality to take them to the next level.'' In Paget's case, Stovell's off-season transfer back to PHC pre-empted his status at the club, which finished at the foot of the Second Division.
Another move has former Bermuda international and Boulevard midfield schemer Brian (Bulla) Anderson getting his feet wet in his first coaching assignment at Devonshire Cougars, which has Arnold West stepping down from the head spot to that of assistant.
A cloud continues to surround Dandy Town, as Mark Trott, who replaced the fired Robert Calderon midway through the 1992-93 campaign, has not yet officially had the term interim removed from his title.
And although Trott is currently putting the team through its paces, former Bermuda national coach Gary Darrell is known to have been contacted regarding his availability.
This has not stopped Trott from naming Devarr Boyles as his assistant, with a final decision by the club executive expected soon.
Darrell has also been connected with newly promoted Vasco, but word is that the job is still in the hands of Danvers Seymour's "as long as he wants it.'' HE'S IN -- The new man at Devonshire Cougars is Brian (Bulla) Anderson.
HE'S OUT -- Anthony Stovell is gone from the coaching ranks at Paget.
