Rugby players celebrate
the Police Rugby Section next month.
The club will hold a formal black tie dinner at the Police Recreation Club in Prospect on Saturday, September 11, to celebrate the landmark in the club's history.
All current and former players and associates of the club are invited. Pat O'Riordan, an ex-Police player now living in the US, will be the guest speaker.
An evening cocktail reception for former members and their partners will be held on the patio of the Police Club on Thursday, September 9.
The section was established on September 7, 1959, by the Police Commissioner of the day, R.G. Henderson, a former British Lion and Scottish international.
Their first game was against the crew of HMS Troubridge , a visiting British frigate. Police won 35-0.
The following year, the club adopted the Police blue colours they still wear today.
The club has enjoyed regular success, especially in 1989-90 when they became the first and so far only team to win a grand slam of domestic trophies in one season.
FRASER THROUGHT TO SEMIS GLF Fraser through to semis Teenager Fraser Hunt produced some scintillating golf to secure a berth in the semi-finals of the Canadian Junior Golf Match Play Championships.
Playing at the Woodbine Golf Club near Toronto, the 15-year-old hit superb form in the last 16 to see off Matthew Meida five and four and was two-under par when the contest ended.
Hunt couldn't maintain that level in yesterday morning's quarter-final against Ryan Vassel, but still did well enough to win three and two. Hunt was three-over-par when the match ended on the 16th green.
Fourteen-year-old Jared Dillas edged through to the quarter-finals, defeating Josh Gartner one-up. But his run came to an end in the last eight when he went down to Don Bryson five and four.
Hunt was due to play Bryson later yesterday in the semi-finals.
