Shorthanded Nationals clobbered by Cleveland
Cleveland 99-3 Cleveland made short work of a nine-man Nationals team at Nationals yesterday, winning convincingly by seven wickets.
Nationals, whose internal problems have seen them struggle to field full teams for the past few weeks, got off to a disastrous start when opener Dennis Trott was dismissed for a duck with no runs to their total and they never managed to recover.
Some stability was added when the other opener Rodney Masters (17) and Granville Bennett (28) added 33 for the second wicket, but once that stand ended the Cleveland bowlers wasted little time in taking the initiative. Of the remaining batsmen only two reached double figures, these were skipper Bruce Perinchief, who scored ten and veteran Wilfred Hodson with 13 not out.
Spinner Johnny Richardson led Cleveland bowlers with three for 19 off 7.4 overs while Jason Simons had two for 21 off 11 overs, including two maidens.
Cleveland reached victory off 24 overs with opener Courtney Trott undefeated on 35 and his opening partner Carlton Smith scoring 19. Jason Simons hit 18 and Curtis Jackson 10 not out.
Cleveland 268 Willow Cuts 215-6 A day after leading Somerset to victory in Cup Match, Dexter Basden's league team Willow Cuts were forced to settle for a draw against Cleveland in their Premier Division clash at Somerset.
Cleveland reached their formidable total thanks to a cracking 62 from skipper Aaron Adams. Skipper Basden and his brother Richard combined to take five wickets for Cuts. Willow Cuts fought back with good batting performances by Joseph Matthews who scored 49, Dwayne Basden 46 and Dwight Basden 37.
The other two games scheduled for the day were postponed, reportedly with the approval of the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control. But this could not be confirmed.
