Squash club crown six of the best
Pirates Port Junior Club Championships concluded at the Devonshire courts.
There were few surprises among the final matches, which saw over 50 youngsters aged between eight and 15 playing off for titles in six age groups.
Fifteen-year-old Daniele Bortoli confirmed his number one ranking among the Boys Under-16 category with an emphatic 3-0 win over second seed James Stout.
Initially it looked as though there might be an upset, as Stout took a 6-3 lead in the first game. But Bortoli, who represented Bermuda in the World Junior Championships in Egypt last summer, settled down and took charge of the game, eventually winning 9-6.
Stout demonstrated a fine touch throughout the match, but the games were increasingly dominated by Bortoli, who punished any loose balls at the front forehand court with powerful straight and cross court drives.
Top seed in the Boys Under-14 final, Stout fared much better, earning a straight games triumph over number two, Jason Edmunds, although the rallies were a lot closer than the 9-1, 9-0, 9-2 scoreline suggests.
Both players had enjoyed comfortable routes to the final, with Edmunds defeating Jordan Monkman and T.J. Clarke in straight games, while Stout notched 3-0 wins against Marvin Burchall and Simon Haworth.
However, like Stout, Haworth reaped reward in the division more relative to his age, although he faced more than a few difficult moments in his Boys Under 12 final match against Andrew Robinson, won 3-0 by Haworth.
A relative newcomer to the game, Robinson threatened in the first, gaining seven points, and in the third when he came from 8-3 down to lead 9-8, only to lose 10-9.
The game was notable for Robinson's calm, retrieving style, that allowed him to escape from difficult situations by playing a high back wall boast, frustrating his opponent on several occasions.
Providing the most excitement on the day was the Boys Under 10 final that pitted eight-year-old Andrew Stout against Andrew Osbourne, both products of the Squash Club's schools programme.
Stout won 3-1, but both players demonstrated good strategy and impressive racquet skills given their age.
After Stout took the first two games 9-6, 9-5, Osbourne served well in the third game when he came from behind to win 9-6 and it looked as though he would continue this run in the fourth game.
However, Stout regained his service and consistent play, and helped by errors on the part of Osbourne, took the fourth game 9-5 for the title.
As expected, Melissa Harney won the Girls Under-16 event, cruising past Nina Harvey in three straight.
Harney was simply untouchable throughout the tournament, not dropping a single point in any of her matches leading up to the final.
Conversely, Harvey struggled to pull out a 10-8 win during her semi-final contest against Karen Jones to ensure a spot in the last two.
Meanwhile, the Girls Under-16 consolation saw Hayley Faries, Anna Forbes, Kristen Law and Jessica Mitchell vying for spots in the final, with Mitchell prevailing at the end 3-2 over Forbes.
The same four females squared off in the Girls Under-14 semis, with Mitchell again dominant, seizing the crown 3-1 over Law this time. Mitchell had earlier defeated Forbes in one semi-final, while Law got past Faries.
