Super Semos steals the show
A terrific four-goal haul by BAA Royals striker Tanya Semos gave the Blues a 5-4 victory over the Whites in yesterday's Women's All-Stars clash at Somerset Cricket Club.
In front of a small crowd, the Island's best women players put on an impressive display of skill, treating spectators to an entertaining match as only the classy finishing of Semos separated the two teams.
It was the Whites who opened the scoring, though, as PHC midfielder Tshana Wade crossed to Tamisha Darrell who beat 'keeper Antoinette Williams to give her side a 1-0 advantage.
But the Blues didn't take long to reply as a hopeful long ball allowed Semos to break through a timid Whites defence and lob 'keeper Latisha Parfitt as she hesitantly came off her line.
Moments later the Whites went back ahead as Chevonne Furbert laid off a good ball to the unmarked Sharmaine Simmons whose shot managed to find the net despite the efforts of Williams.
The see-saw battle continued and in the 25th minute a long ball from sturdy defender Terry Paynter found the goal-hungry Semos, who controlled smartly before placing a left-footed chip around the helpless Parfitt.
With the game now tied at 2-2, the Blues kicked into high gear and went on to score three more goals in the final 20 minutes of the half.
Semos completed her hat-trick when the bounce of a long goalkick by Williams deceived the Whites defence. Semos outpaced the defenders before coolly slotting home her third goal.
As if her earlier efforts weren't enough, Semos saved her best for last. The move was started by Paynter who, after pushing forward down the right wing, showed great vision with a perfectly weighted cross to an unmarked Semos. She made no mistake as her brilliant header would have made any First Division striker proud.
With the score now 4-2, it was Rude Girls' speedy forward Sekina Clarkes turn to get in on the scoring. After making a strong run down the left flank and outmuscling the 'keeper with a firm tackle, Clarke was left with the simple task of tapping the ball into an empty net to give the Blues a commanding 5-2 advantage.
But the Whites didn't go down without a fight as they found the net twice in the second half. Playmaker Chevonne Furbert, who looked dangerous throughout the contest, was instrumental in both goals. It was her pass in the 70th minute that allowed Darrell to score her second as she side-footed the ball home from an acute angle.
Then in the 83rd minute, the talented Darrell completed her hat-trick after a cross from Furbert.
But the day belonged to Semos who received MVP honours after a stellar performance.
