Swim pair begin build-up to Atlanta Games

Two of Bermuda's top swimmers, Stephen Fahy and Stanley Harris, are heading out to next year's Olympic venue in Atlanta, Georgia for the Pan-Pacific Games which begin on August 13.

Fahy, who recently competed in the Central American and Caribbean Age Group Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico, will take part in butterfly and freestyle events while Harris, who swims for University of Massachussetts, will compete in the backstroke and individual medley.

The Games are expected to attract swimmers from North, Central and South America, Japan and other nations surrounding the Pacific. The duo will be joined by coach Richard Goodwin.

Fahy and Harris, along with Craig Roberts and Trevor Ferguson, who also competed in Mexico, are hoping to qualify for the Atlanta Olympics. The deadline for qualifying is next June and between now and then, all four will be involved in heavy training in and out of the pool.

"We'll train extensively and it will be a challenge just to meet the Olympic qualifying standards,'' said Fahy yesterday.

Meanwhile, most of the Island's top swimmers will see action this evening when the Summer National Age Group Championships get underway at the BASA pool.

continuing through the weekend.

The meet will feature some 110 swimmers from the three local clubs, Harbour, Sharks and Triangles, with age groups of 19 and over, 15-18, 13-14, 11-12, 9-10 and eight and under for both males and females.

Fahy holds several of the fastest times in the 15-18 division but is expected to be challenged by Ferguson, while Harris and Roberts will be the swimmers to watch in a small 19 and over group.

Stephen Kenny and Adam Petty of Triangles and Richard Collis of Harbour should be the top contenders in the eight and under boys category while on the girls side, Meghan Jones of Triangles will face competition from Sharks swimmers, Sophie and Melanie Fullerton, Alexis Barker and Christina Dodwell.

Darryl Steynor of Harbour will be favoured for victories in the boys 9-10 division as will Erica Frith of Sharks and Kirstie Klesniks of Triangles among the girls.

The 11-12 boys age group should be dominated by national squad swimmers Jimmy Pereira and Chris King of Harbour, Graham Smith of Triangles and Jonathan Herring of Sharks while the girls should see a battle develop between Candace Marson and Rebecca Hanson, both representing Sharks.

Top performer at the championships in Mexico, Matthew Hammond, competes in the boys 13-14 category and with fellow national squad members Paul Fox of Harbour and Ronald Cowen and Nuri Latham of Sharks in that division, records could tumble.

Competition should also be keen among the girls as Elisha Miller of Harbour and Zoe Roberts and Abigail Madeiros of Sharks vie for the top spot.

Only two swimmers have entered the 15-18 and 19 and over girls category -- Tamika Smith and Sarah Titterton in the 15-18, and Alicia Mullan and Claire Mancell in the 19 and over. But these swimmers could be put into other age groups in order to increase competition.
