Tucker ton rocks Somerset

Southampton 195-0 Kwame Tucker blasted a magnificent unbeaten hundred and Keith Wainwright added a half century as Southampton battered Somerset by 10 wickets at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday.

Southampton thus solidified their chances of earning a Camel Cup berth for next season, holding onto third place, with the top four qualifying for the tournament.

After Somerset had set a reasonable target of 191, Tucker and Wainwright quickly set about reducing the arrears as the pair attacked a tame bowling outfit with shots to all corners.

Tucker slammed seven sixes and eight fours in his knock of 101, while opening partner Wainwright played the ultimate support role -- and no doubt gave the Bermuda national squad selectors food for thought -- smashing seven fours and a six in his 66 not out.

Earlier Cordell Gilbert had propped up the home side's batting line-up with a well played 56 not out that included two fours and five sixes. Others making contributions were captain Wendell White (36), Craig Brangman (24) and Tony Cheeseman (20).

Ryan Belboda was Southampton's top bowler with two for 33, while Janeiro Tucker and Olin Jones likewise took a pair of scalps.

PHC 103 Western Stars 106-3 Newly installed Premier champs Western Stars continued their perfect season record of victories, as they defeated PHC in emphatic fashion, strolling to a seven wicket triumph.

The win was the St. John's Road club's 13th consecutive for the year and 21st straight win taking in all competitions -- Camel Cup, Central Counties, Knockout and Premier League.

PHC were never in with a chance once they could only produce a total of 106, Arthur Richards top scoring with 35 and skipper Cal Waldron adding 32.

Leg spinner Justin Robinson took three for 29 to lead Stars' bowling attack, while Saleem Mukudem and Gary Brangman each took two wickets.

Treadwell Gibbons Sr, took batting honours for the home side, hitting a quickfire 52, including four sixes and a similar number of fours, as he and youngster Jakon Edness (eight) put on 45 for the first wicket.

With the departure of Gibbons, Edness and Ricky Brangman (seven) it was left to Jermaine Postlethwaite (18 not out) and Robinson (eight not out) to see Stars eclipse the target.

Willow Cuts 223-6 Warwick 127 Andre Hendrickson made Warwick pay for showing up with just eight players, scorching the hosts for 89 runs as Willow Cuts won by 96 runs at Southampton Oval.

Hendrickson tallied 68 of his score in boundaries, hammering 17 fours during an unbeaten innings.

Meanwhile, captain Dexter Basden likewise got among the runs, smashing seven fours and two sixes in his 57, while Dwight Basden lashed a quickfire 23 that had four fours and a six.

Stephen Bremar took three wickets, but at extravagant cost as his five overs conceded 46 runs. Kion Butterfield took two for 30 and Blake Rayner one for18.

In reply captain Daniel Morgan hit 53 before being bowled by Steval Mendes, while Perry Scott (23) and Frank Morgan (21) also got runs, but not nearly enough.

Charles Swan was the top bowler for the visitors with three for 18, while Mendes took two for 30 in support.

Flatts 280-8 Devonshire Rec. 152 Flatts tuned up for their Eastern Counties final against St. David's on Sunday by trouncing Devonshire Rec. by 128 runs at Devonshire, thanks mainly to a fine allround performance by skipper Rahji Edness.

Edness first stroked 62 to ensure a formidable total and then followed up by taking three wickets for 32 off just 3.2 overs.

Others making major contributions were Derek Wright with 48, Vernon Eve (34) and Quinn Outerbridge (36).

Omar Amory led the Devonshire bowlers with two for 41 while Dennis Williams had two for 48 and Wendell Swan two for 50.

Devonshire offered little resistance in being dismissed in just 36.2 overs with Winston Trott scoring a team high 28. Opener Caldon Grimes followed with 22 and Oladapo Fredericks 20.

Cleveland 160 St. David's 64 While Flatts were winning, Eastern Counties champions St. David's faltered badly when they were embarrassed by a 10-man Cleveland team at Lord's, losing by 128 runs.

The 64 posted by the home side represented by far their worst batting effort of the season, player-coach Clay Smith being their lone player in double figures with 19.

Doing the bowling damage for Cleveland were veteran spinners Grant Smith, who has done more umpiring than playing this season, and Johnny Richardson. Smith finished with four for 31 off seven overs while Richardson returned stunning figures of three for five off three overs.

Earlier skipper Aaron Adams stroked 82 to lead Cleveland's batting.

For St. David's Dale Fox took three for 31, Sammy Robinson two for 23 and Delyone Borden two for 31.

Somerset Bridge 45 St. George's 46-2 A day after upsetting Warwick in the Western Counties Cup semi-final Somerset Bridge were back to their losing ways, beaten by eight wickets in a game reduced to 43 overs.

Perhaps it was the result of too much celebration on Saturday night, but whatever the reason last-placed Bridge never put up a fight.

They succumbed to St.George's owling in 28.1 overs with Ryan Steede snatching three for 10 off seven overs. Skipper Herbie Bascome claimed three for 16 off seven overs and spinner Eugene Foggo chipped in with two for five off five overs.

The hosts needed just eight overs to reach their target, opener Dexter Smith undefeated on 18 and Steede scoring 14.

Somerset 135 St. David's 137-3 St. David's hammered Somerset by seven wickets at the west end during this Saturday make-up match.

Young O.J.Pitcher hit a brilliant unbeaten half century to lead the Islanders' charge to victory, while veteran Allen Richardson scored 45 before retiring hurt.

The win kept alive St. David's bid for a Camel Cup berth.

Bailey's Bay v Social Club Social Club showed up with just four players and consequently forfeited this match scheduled at Sea Breeze Oval.
