Village hang on for draw
St. George's added to North Village's recent gloom by denying them victory at Wellington Oval with two late goals.
The Red Devils looked to have overcome the FA Cup loss to Second Division side Hotels and the resignation last week of coach Wendell Baxter by taking a 2-0 lead late into the game.
But complacency led to their undoing in the final ten minutes as bottom team St. George's played their best football of the match to salvage only their fourth point of the season.
"We have five games left and I would suggest to any team not to take the three points for granted because we will be playing for dignity and pride,'' manager Kenny Bascome said.
Village thought the points were in the bag when they brought on Bantam Division player Jameiko Jennings for his first taste of First Division football in the 80th minute, just seconds after St. George's pulled back the first goal through substitute Jerome Laws.
And five minutes after that the lead was lost when Neil Paynter scored into an empty net after Carlyle Crockwell was drawn out of position and failed to clear a back pass.
It didn't take Village too long to break the deadlock, with Elliott Jennings scoring in the ninth minute when some poor defending by St. George's allowed him to score from close range.
In the heavy rain Village controlled the game with Elliott Jennings getting on the end of a cross from Kevin Jennings and putting a glancing header just wide of the far post.
The best chance for St. George's in the first half came in the 25th minute when Darrin Walker's low shot went just past the far post. Otherwise Crockwell, playing his first match of the season in the absence of the suspended Dwayne (Streaker) Adams, had a quiet first half.
Village doubled their lead on the half hour, this time when a corner on the left by Kevin Jennings saw Nakia Smith streak in on the blind side of the defence and poke the ball forward for defender Irving Romaine to smash home a shot from eight yards.
The St. George's fortunes chances in the 57th minute when they made a triple Village, Colts draw bringing on Derek Wright, Donald Whitfield and Laws for Moreno, Clifton Simmons and Gary Tucker.
Another substitution was made a minute later when referee Richard Knight gave up the whistle because of a foot injury and swopped duties with linesman Lawrence DeShields.
After the two late goals by St. George's, Village still almost won the game, but Sean Dill's shot was cleared off the line by defender Earl Basden in the 88th minute.
Assistant Leroy Wilson is handling Village as interim coach while the club searches for a new head man to replace Baxter.
