Clarence (Connie) Simmons, who was buried on Wednesday, is one of a number of former Cup Match players to die this year. He was in his 82nd year.

Simmons was a St. George's skipper, having played his last season in 1959 when he handed over the captaincy to Cal (Bummy) Symonds.

"He was an opening medium pace left-arm bowler, one who was very difficult to bat against. He had an awful good length and line,'' recalled long-time St.

George's administrator Mansfield Smith.

"If my mind serves me correct, he was captain of the team when St. George's scored one of their greatest victories which was against a West Indies select that included Gary Sobers and Everton Weekes. St. George's were dismissed for 109, but they fought back to win the game.

"He was a very good leader. He was born in Somerset but came down to St.

George's before he played Cup Match for the first time.'' DEATH OBITUARY OBT
